Scientists at St. Petersburg Mining University have found a way to reduce the cost of winter ship fuel by a quarter

The savings are achieved due to an innovative additive developed by the university.

On Tuesday, February 9, it became known that the Department of Chemical Technologies and Processing of Energy Carriers at St. Petersburg Mining University has produced synthetic additives that significantly improve the low-temperature properties of the fuel.

The preliminary production cost of the additive will be 150-200 rubles per kilogram. The selling price of comparable foreign analogs varies in the range of 500-600 rubles per kilogram. Besides, the use of Mining University’s additives will enable to reduce considerably the cost of production of winter and arctic grades of marine fuel. Adding 1% of the additive to the fuel will decrease the prime cost by 20-25%.

In parallel with the work on additives, the scientists of Mining University are solving the urgent problem of creating ecological marine fuel with low sulfur content. The research is successfully carried out by graduate student Ksenia Smyshlyaeva under the guidance of Professor Natalya Kondrasheva, Dr. of Engineering.

Today in Russia there are no effective technologies for the production of low-sulfur marine fuels of high quality that meet environmental requirements tightened since the beginning of 2020. Today, the sulfur content in fuel shall not exceed 0.5%. Earlier the threshold value was about 3.5%. The requirements were introduced by International Maritime Organization (IMO) in accordance with the International Convention MARPOL, which defines a set of measures to prevent water pollution during the operation of ships.

The articles on the results of the University’s research are published in the journals of the first and second quartiles of citation indexed by the Scopus and Web of Science databases. Negotiations with domestic oil refining companies about introducing the innovative technology into production are underway.
