MGRI Becomes a Green University

The Russian State Geological Prospecting University (MGRI-RSGPU), named after Sergo Ordzhonikidze, reported it had signed an agreement on joining the Association of Green Universities of Russia. It also hit the Top 40 Russian higher educational institutions according to the UI GreenMetric University Ranking.

The membership in the Association will foster the development of the ecological culture of MGRI's students and employees. The University also intends to take a set of actions aiming at the reduction of its environmental footprint. These include, among others, efforts in waste management, public utility conservation, sticking to principles of environmentally preferable purchasing.

The University never ceases to pay the closest attention to environmental matters. For example, last year, MGRI joined the All-Russian «ЭкоДобро» (EcoGood) campaign. The latter included gardening of the area and a plogging marathon - long-distance running combined with a waste pick-up.

"I am sure that by joining the Association, we have taken our collaborative work to a new level. Having done so, we will thereby increase the environmental awareness of MGRI's staff and students," comments Anastasia Mashkova, Vice-Rector for International Affairs and Regional Cooperation.

The Association of Green Universities of Russia was established in 2017 as part of the Green Universities of Russia federal partnership programme implemented by the All-Russian ECA Green Movement and the ERA Foundation supporting youth-led initiatives. Nearly 80 educational institutions have joined the Association by now.

Let us remind that a group of scientists from the Institute of Architecture and Construction at South Ural State University found a use for waste products originating from the municipal water supply system of Chelyabinsk. Blending them into the clay mixture allows the production of high-strength ceramic building materials.
