The International Autumn School ”Modern Mining Technologies” has come to an end at the St. Petersburg Mining University, where 70 students and teachers from the Chinese University of Mining Engineering and Technology (CUMT) improved their profile competences. The friendly country is eager to adopt Russia’s rich experience in mining.

In March 2023, the heads of the Russian Federation and the People’s Republic of China met, resulting in a joint statement by the presidents on ”deepening relations of comprehensive partnership and strategic cooperation entering a new era.” The key areas of co-operation included education and science as the basis for the dynamic development of any state. In particular, the parties agreed to encourage inter-university cooperation, support the activities of Russian-Chinese profile associations of universities, and promote joint educational institutions and programmes.

The international internship programme of four graduate students from the People’s Republic of China at St. Petersburg Mining University has come to an end. All of them successfully defended their graduate theses and returned to their homeland. On the eve of their departure, Forpost asked the guests of the city on the Neva what expectations they had a year ago about studying at Russia’s oldest technical university and how much reality justified them.

The South African city of Gkeberha hosted the Young Scientists Forum, which included the sixth BRICS Young Innovators Competition. A total of 20 applicants from five countries - Russia, China, Brazil, South Africa and India - were selected to take part in the intellectual competition. The Empress Catherine II Saint Petersburg Mining University under the International Triple Diploma Program hosted the defence of graduate qualification works by master’s degree students of domestic higher education institutions, members of the Nedra Consortium. This is a joint project of St. Petersburg University, Freiberg Mining Academy (Germany) and the University of Leoben (Austria).

The agreement on the establishment of the community of technical universities ”Subsoil of Africa” was signed the day before at the Empress Catherine II Saint Petersburg Mining University. Its goal is to reduce the deficit of national engineering personnel, as well as to develop the mining and processing industry.

The Rector of St. Petersburg Mining University called the availability of quality education the main goal of the UN sustainable development. On Thursday, July 27, the Russia-Africa Economic and Humanitarian Forum kicked off in the city on the Neva River. One of its sections was devoted to the prospects of integration of the parties in the field of education and science. As the participants of the discussion noted, this is one of the most pressing issues, since it is higher education that today represents the foundation underlying the socio-economic development of any country.

This week, Mining University received a delegation of diverse representatives from different countries from Africa.
