Two projects of the university scientists took first place in their nominations, three more received silver and bronze awards. On Wednesday, March 27, Empress Catherine II Saint Petersburg Mining University summed up the results of participation in XXVII International Salon of Inventions and Innovative Technologies ”Archimedes”, which was traditionally held in Moscow. This year it gathered representatives of 28 states and 30 regions of our country, together they exhibited 570 developments in 30 different areas.

Professor Alfred Nordmann of the Darmstadt Technical University (Germany) visited St. Petersburg Mining University. The scientist was brought to St. Petersburg by the initiative to hold an international conference on the philosophical understanding of technological progress at the oldest technical university in Russia. The idea has already been supported by leading scientists from the University of Padua (Italy), the University of Groningen (Netherlands), the University of South Carolina (USA), and the Russian Academy of Sciences.

The Academic Council of the Empress Catherine II St. Petersburg Mining University has voted to nominate for the Russian Government Prize in Science and Technology 2024 a work dedicated to improving labor safety during the exploitation of deposits located at great depths.

Empress Catherine II Saint Petersburg Mining University continues a series of laboratory experiments aimed at creating a fundamentally new technology for the production of aluminum. Now it is produced by electrolysis of alumina solution in molten cryolite, and this process takes place in apparatuses with horizontally arranged anode and cathode.

A team from the Department of Architecture of Empress Catherine II Saint Petersburg Mining University won the competition to create an architectural concept for the integrated modernisation of the Road of Life memorial and landscape complex. Ten fifth-year students under the guidance of Associate Professor Anton Golovin won the final against representatives of the country’s leading architectural universities - the Moscow Architectural Institute and the St Petersburg University of Architecture and Civil Engineering.

The transfer of knowledge that is not useful in the workplace is perhaps the main problem of higher education in Russia. It is no coincidence that Vladimir Putin’s August instruction to create a sovereign university ranking focuses attention on assessing the employability of graduates. The decree on the pilot project to improve the higher education system (dated 12.05.2023) is also primarily aimed at strengthening the integration of universities with the real economy.

Russia’s withdrawal from the Bologna process implies, first of all, raising the level of basic higher education. This is one of the goals of the pilot project involving 6 domestic universities, which was launched in May this year by the decree of President Vladimir Putin. Today’s first-year students of the Empress Catherine II Saint Petersburg Mining University will get not just an additional year and a half of study to the 4-year bachelor’s degree, but a fundamentally higher quality engineering education closer to the needs of modern production.

Rectors Vladimir Litvinenko of Empress Catherine II Saint Petersburg Mining University and Shirong Ge of China University of Mining Engineering and Technology (Beijing) signed a memorandum on the establishment of a joint educational institution to train personnel from both countries.

Maksim Natchuk and Matvey Vasiliev, students of St. Petersburg Mining University, have developed a prototype of mixed reality (MR) glasses, which, according to experts, have all chances to be put into production. Their main distinguishing feature is their low cost as compared with Western analogues, which increases the likelihood of mass use of this technology in the industry.
