In 1816 - 205 years ago - Empress Catherine the Great signed a decree on transferring her private collection of minerals from the Hermitage to the Mining Museum. The collectables were mentioned as far back as in the first guide to St. Petersburg. Yet, they have remained mixed with the rest of the exhibits for almost two centuries, with some of the items ending up gifted to other museums.

The collection of the Mining Museum has been enriched with a new exhibit directly related to the attacks of September 11, 2001. The bronze monument was created in three copies - one installed in New York, one in the Konstantinovsky Palace, and the third now in downtown St. Petersburg.

On Wednesday, 17 March, Mining Museum, St. Petersburg, informed it had concluded experiments on removing toxic impurities from wastewater. The experiments were carried out using mineral samples from the museum’s vaults, reports the press office of the city’s largest natural-scientific exposition.  The peculiarity of the solution lies in the filtering material capable of trapping even the most toxic components. Iron-manganese nodules were used as a barrier for wastewater treatment.

One hundred and seventy-three years ago, in 1848, Nikifor Syutkin, a worker at the state-owned Miass gold mines, was, just as usually he did, digging for gold. Suddenly he heard a tinkling sound from underneath his pickaxe. When he shook the dirt off the find, he barely managed to elevate a 36-kilogram gold nugget up the wooden ladder.
