Despite the cruel wars and fighting for the control of mineral resources, Rukirande Indrissa Elir, a student from the Congo, wants to come back home once his studies in Russia are over. Why? What is he going to do upon return?

Ten years ago, there were 13.5 thousand degree students of foreign origins in Saint Petersburg. This number has increased to 31 thousand by now. If other education forms - such as short-term programmes or summer schools - are included, the figure rises to 38 thousand people.

When Jacob Moharram was studying at school, he was an Air Force cadet. The dreams of becoming a pilot never came true nonetheless - all because of his height. So an Australian lad decided to study geology and mining instead, and as a study destination, to the surprise of many he chose Russia.

This autumn, the Russia-Africa Summit took place in Sochi, one of the most southern Russian cities. Over the course of two days the event lasted, a number of significant agreements were achieved.

Beirut, Damascus, Latakia, Batroun, Tripoli - what would you think of when seeing the list of those cities? Most likely, the first things that spring to mind are military operations and counterterrorism efforts; Russians are not the exception and have similar thoughts. Diese Geschichte begann vor zweihundert Jahren. Der Finanzminister des jungen russischen Zaren Nikolaus I. wurde informiert, dass im Ural eine sehr reiche Platinlagerstätte erschlossen wurde. Niemand wusste, was man damit machen sollte, deswegen hat man aus dem abgebauten Platin zuerst Schrot hergestellt. Bald darauf hat man beschlossen, Münzen daraus zu prägen. Egor Kankrin bat den berühmtesten Gelehrten jener Zeit Alexander von Humboldt, diese Idee zu bewerten. Es war die Zeit, als Russland mit der Krise der Vertaubung und Erschöpfung der Lagerstätten konfrontiert wurde. Deswegen wurde der Naturforscher Humboldt auch gebeten, auf Staatskosten den Zustand des Rohstoffkomplexes des Russischen Reiches zu untersuchen.

It is essential to recreate specialist’s degree programmes at the universities so as to prepare and train new engineers. Massive improvements in the quality of education are required so that new graduates would be able to master complex engineering challenges, if we want to develop main sectors of our local economy and want to move from standardized technologies to newer innovative and technology-intensive ones.
