The British ranking agency Times Higher Education (THE) has published its annual ranking of higher education institutions that hold leading positions in the field of interdisciplinary scientific research. Nearly one thousand institutions were ranked, selected in a preliminary screening from more than 25,000 licensed universities worldwide. Empress Catherine II Saint Petersburg Mining University is positioned in the 251-300 range.
Empress Catherine II Saint Petersburg Mining University ranked among the Top 10 universities of the Russian Federation.
The ranking methodology is based on 11 carefully selected performance indicators to assess universities in three key areas: inputs (funding), process (success metrics, opportunities provided by the institution, administrative support, and advancement), and outcomes (the number and share of interdisciplinary scientific publications, reputation).
The Mining University has the highest score among domestic participants in the first category, with a score of 95.1 for the funding of scientific projects. By this criterion, St. Petersburg Mining University is also among the world’s top ten. THE analysts specifically emphasize that this indicator at the university, “... along with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, has been achieved through industrial and laboratory funding by transnational companies.”
It is no surprise that at Russia’s oldest technical university, investment in science averages 20 million rubles per researcher per year. The lion’s share comes from non-governmental sources.
The university is also distinguished by the level of equipment in its research complex, which is a key indicator for “windows” of opportunity.
The publication activity indicator at Empress Catherine II Saint Petersburg Mining University is high despite unprecedented sanctions pressure from English-language scientometric databases.
In compiling the ranking, more than 174.9 million citations to 18.7 million journal articles, conference proceedings, books, and book chapters published over five years were analyzed. The data included more than 28,700 active peer-reviewed journals, as well as all indexed publications from 2020 to 2024.
Times Higher Education is part of the “big three” ranking agencies together with ShanghaiRanking Consultancy (PRC) and Quacquarelli Symonds (UK). In the QS subject ranking for “Mining,” Empress Catherine II Saint Petersburg Mining University holds 4th place among universities worldwide.
