Five post-graduate students from Saint-Petersburg Mining University were awarded with prizes for steel industry participants at Saarland in Germany. The ceremony took place in Potsdam as a part of the XI Russian-German Raw Materials Dialogue, which came to its end on the 8th of November.

Politics, businessmen, scientists – they all came to participate in this conference and discuss such issues as smart use of conventional energy sources, environmental protection, joint project implementation in mining industry and partnership prospects between higher schools of the two countries.

Just as in previous years, both Russian and German postgraduates were among the forum participants. The best of the best were awarded with the prizes, which were handed out by Hans-Joachim Welsh, Chairman of the Raw Materials Committee of the Federal Union of German Industry BDI and Managing Director of "ROGESA Roheisengesellschaft Saar".

Sergey Kryltsov, student of the Mining University, was awarded with a grant for a solution, which helps improving electric power quality by keeping operating standards in accordance with specified values. This issue is of specific importance to large-scale enterprises, as any disruptions badly affect profitability.

As Sergey explains, "In order to improve the power quality, it should be measured first, but it is a time-consuming process. It takes as long as 20 milliseconds to measure some parameters. New devices, which utilize our innovative features, may perform required measurements in 5 milliseconds, four times faster as before".

Among other innovations, presented by young researchers from the Mining University, are new developments aiming at improving gold recovery efficiency, reducing man-caused impact of mining enterprises on ecosystems and some others as well. As noted by German professors and businessmen, these innovative projects, developed by students from St. Petersburg, both Russian and European businesses may consider being worthy of note.
