According to QS (Quacquarelli Symonds) Rankings in Mineral & Mining Engineering, Saint-Petersburg Mining University is in the top 20 for the third year in a row.

This Tuesday, the ranking agency Quacquarelli Symonds published an updated list of the best world universities in 48 different subject areas. Mining University is the only Russian University to hit the top 20 in its own field. There are, though, two more Russian universities in the top 50 – Moscow State University and MISiS (the National University of Science and Technology).

There are four indicators that are used in the QS World University Rankings: an opinion of the academic community and employers, citation index and the h-index, which is a descriptor of citedness of publications. Interestingly enough, the share of each indicator varies, depending on the subject area.

As for the ranking in the "Mineral & Mining Engineering" area, 40% of the final rank depends on the estimates given by executives of the core businesses. This year, the Mining University set a new record – 96 points of out of a maximum of 100 in this indicator.

As Vladimir Litvinenko, the Principal of the Mining University, explains, "One of the most important tasks for any university is to train young specialists. It is an honour for us that employers truely appreciate our efforts in developing a sufficient pool of human resources. It should be also noted that we have improved our performance in relation to each of the four indicators. Thus, we managed to enter the top 20 of the QS Rankings by Subject for the third time in a row, despite the fact that there were 520 universities-participants in our subject area, an increase of 100 compared to the last year".
