British IOM3 is invited as a partner of the Mining University to conduct qualifications assessments of mining staff.
The delegation from the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3) made a visit to the Mining University on Thursday, April 18. During the meeting with the Principal of the University Vladimir Litvinenko, representatives of IOM3, one of the most prestigious professional associations in Western Europe, discussed issues related to preparing supplementary cooperation agreement.
The International Competence Centre for Mining-Engineering Education under the auspices of UNESCO is established on the basis of the Mining University. Currently, it is involved in developing a unified system of international professional certification of engineers. The next step in this direction will take place in London, at the end of May, when IOM3 and the Competence Centre will sign an agreement on cooperation with the London Stock Exchange. There are also plans to invite executives of the largest energy companies, such as Shell, BP, DeBeers and others, to the signing ceremony.
The most important details of this agreement have been discussed at the recent working meeting, which was attended by Vladimir Litvinenko, the Principal of the Mining University and Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Competence Centre, Colin Church, the Chief Executive of IOM 3, and Ian Bowbrick, Director of Professional Development and Membership.
According to Georgy Meshcheryakov, Deputy Director General of the Competence Centre, "IOM3 is invited to be our partner in the audit of mining companies, which are listed on the London Stock Exchange. The aim here is to fully assess competence level of their employees, because human resource capacity inevitably affects capitalization and stability of the company. It is also important to ensure that there is information exchange between stock markets and the London Stock Exchange."
Both representatives of the Stock Exchange and IOM3 support this concept. Colin Church, its Chief Executive, has the same opinion. He believes that professional communities "should be constantly demonstrating their value to society".
As he says, "For IMO3, we consider it to be a fundamental part of what we are doing to promote professionalism and professional standards both in the UK and, indeed, globally. In fact, our aim is to establish a global network for whole materials cycle. Therefore, we are always interested in helping like-minded organizations, such as universities and the national associations, to develop ways of promoting professional standards, whatever they may be – for engineers, for scientists, for environmentalists."
