Samara State Technical University (SSTU) reported it had obtained a licence from the Ministry of Industry and Trade, Russia, allowing it to develop, produce, test, store, sell, and dispose of munitions. SSTU is currently the only Russian university in possession of such a licence, according to the up-to-date version of the register of license holders published on the Ministry's website. Developing new types of ammunition has been more typically practised by specialised defence enterprises and about a dozen research institutes.

"If previously our staff could only do research work, now they have the right to design and develop ammunition, too. With the interests of national defence in mind, this licence will enable us to use our resources more efficiently. By this, I mean the scientific and human resources of Samara Polytech's field-specific departments and our experimental facility in Chapayevsk," says Dmitry Demoretskiy, head of the Technology of Solid Chemicals Department at SSTU.

Let us recall that this February, SSTU presented a test facility to explore subsoil resources. One of its uses is to examine the drilling mud effect on the mechanical properties of rock material.
