Pictures of historical exhibits from the Mining Museum will be included in the catalogue commemorating the 300th anniversary of the petroleum industry in Russia.

The year 2021 marks two memorable dates in the history of Russia — 300 years since commercial oil production in Russia started and 210 years since gas was first used. In connection with this, the Museum of Geology, Oil and Gas in Khanty-Mansiysk initiated the scientific-educational project named Atlas Nefti (in English: Atlas of Petroleum). It is expected that the largest industry-based museums, universities, the Russian Academy of Sciences, and field-specific enterprises will participate.

"The Atlas Nefti book will feature unique cartographic, documentary, artistic and photographic works. This collection will provide a visual demonstration of the history of oil industrialisation in Russia," says Ivan Yashkov, Deputy Director for Research at Khanty-Mansiysk Museum of Geology, Oil and Gas. "We'll make use of the results that we get in compiling texts on the history of petroleum production, drawing up plans for speciality courses in history, seminars, and other university and school courses, in regional studies, tourism and museum activities. A presentation of the publication is scheduled to take place in Khanty-Mansiysk, at the museum's venue."

The museum at Mining University is ready to provide 30 digital images depicting the models of mining equipment. The photos to be presented for the anniversary catalogue include those of:

  • cable-tool and pole drill rigs,
  • a fragment of the derrick,
  • various devices for percussion drilling of oil wells from the XIX-XX centuries.

Digital copies of the museum's showpieces will form the basis of thematic sections of the book.

"The main objective of the Atlas Nefti project is to show that petroleum museums, along with their collections as valuable culture bearers, are of great importance. We're also willing to present a new scientific-educational project to illustrate the 'phenomenon of oil' and its value for our country and the Russian society," notes Ivan Yashkov.
