On How St. Petersburg Mining University Students Do Their Internships

Summer is not only a vacation period but also a time when thousands of students go on internships to get their first professional experience in their chosen field.

The country’s oldest technical university annually concludes about 650 contracts with companies in the mineral resource complex, which allows students to apply the knowledge they acquire during their studies in practice. A part of them goes to the enterprises of the North-West Federal District. Among them are Metrostroy, Transneft-Baltika, Zeppelin Rusland, Gazprom Transgaz Saint Petersburg and some others.

However, the majority of future engineers choose companies that work in Siberia, Yakutia, Komi Republic, Krasnoyarsk, and Krasnodar regions. Among the university's partners are such industry leaders as SUEK-Kuzbass, Polyus-Aldan, Surgutneftegas, Uralkali, LUKOIL-Western Siberia, and Gazprom Dobycha structures in the cities of Yamburg, Urengoy, and Nadym.

RN-Yuganskneftegaz, Rosneft's main production division, has long had fruitful cooperation with Gorny in this area. The current year 2021 was no exception - more than 50 people, studying at the geological exploration and oil and gas faculties, went to Ugra.

One of them is Georgy Moskvin, a fourth-year student at Mining University. This is the second year in a row that he has come to Nefteyugansk. In 2020 he practised at the Yuzhno-Surgutskoye field as a third-grade oil and gas production operator. Now the young man was hired by the same company and in the same position, but the period of his industrial practice increased from four to six working weeks. In addition, he was offered several options for placement, and the young man's choice fell on the Mamontovskoye field.

“It is not difficult to get an internship here - it is enough to have a good grade point average. All the students get a job, which means that we are full-fledged employees of the company and get a salary. The first one in the professional career! Last year I saw with my own eyes how the process of oil production is set up in reality. I was personally acquainted with the equipment, tools, machinery, extraction technology, and the production chain of the company as a whole. The main difference of this year was the fact that the team, in which I worked, was in the shop itself, the well stock attached to it was much bigger, and a new area was being drilled. This allowed me to see how specialists do their work, how they make decisions and keep everything under control at such a responsible area,” tells Georgy Moskvin.

He specifies that the knowledge received at the lectures is certainly important, it is a base which each future engineer should possess. But it is the skills received during practice that allow you to increase your competitiveness in the labour market and realize the scale of the work you will have to do in the future.

“Such internships allow the graduates to reduce the time of adaptation at the enterprise because they are already familiar with the entire technological cycle. Besides, this is a great opportunity for career development. After completion of practical training, I had a clear and distinct understanding of future profession, its peculiarities, company structure, specificity of work of basic and auxiliary services, organization of production. I am very impressed, and after graduation, I will try to become a part of the RN-Yuganskneftegaz team," Georgy stressed.

According to the Head of the Youth Policy Department of the company Artur Faskhutdinov, the organization of internships for representatives of specialized universities allows to identify the most talented students, capable of high-quality performance of production tasks, and to select the most promising of them for future employment.

"At present, 36 graduates from Saint Petersburg Mining University are working at RN-Yuganskneftegaz. In percentage ratio, this is more than 10% of the total number of young specialists. The University is the leader by this index. According to the results of the interview with graduates of the graduating class of 2021, we can predict that Mining University will hold the first place,” noted Arthur Faskhutdinov.

He specified that practical training gives candidates an undeniable advantage as a student who proved himself positively during such training, guarantees himself a job by 90%.
