Today the final list of applicants to the Bachelor's and Specialist's degree programs at St. Petersburg Mining University has become known.
The numbers for 2021 are strikingly different from those of the previous few years. Applicants submitted more than 33,000 applications to the university’s admissions committee. By comparison, in 2018 there were 16,000, and in 2019 and 2020 - 17,000.
The competition for the right to gain knowledge at the oldest higher technical school in Russia has also increased. The competition for admission was 19 people per place (a year earlier, it was 11). The number of places for admission on the federal funding basis this year was also record-breaking, totalling 1831 places for Bachelor’s and Specialist’s degree programs and 420 places for Master’s degree programs (a year ago, it was 1953 places).
The most in-demand educational areas for yesterday’s high-passing students were Civil Engineering (minimum passing score of 259) and Chemical Engineering (minimum passing score of 265). Competition for them was 44 and 16 people per seat. The most popular programs remained “Mining Engineering” and “Oil and Gas Engineering,” to which 367 and 244 freshmen were enrolled.
Despite the possibility of face-to-face submission of documents in compliance with all anti-epidemic measures, more than 85% of applications were accepted remotely - through the electronic information system of Mining University.
“Let us note other features of admission in 2021. The innovations included the possibility for applicants to submit the USE of choice, and one stage of enrollment by the general competition for the budget form of education, and competitive lists of applicants, which do not contain the name of the applicant. All this had to be implemented according to special requirements for university admission, which were set by the Ministry of Education and Science in April 2021 and supposed to conduct the admission campaign mostly in a distance format without the submission of original education certificates. Mining University made every effort to ensure the most informative and transparent admission,” told the executive secretary of the Admission Committee of the institution Denis Pelenev.
Already today, new freshmen begin to receive uniforms and electronic passes; via social networks, they look for and get acquainted with their classmates and neighbours in the dormitory, find out where the celebratory assembly will take place, write reviews on the work of the Admissions Committee. For example, according to Elena M., her son was accepted to five leading technical universities in St. Petersburg, but he chose Mining University.
“We were pleasantly amazed at how perfectly debugged the work was, how knowledgeable the AC workers were about the current situation. We felt that our applicant was of interest, and this made all the difference in the world. Such a university just can’t fail to teach a profession,” Elena wrote.
Officially, the admission campaign will end on August 20, when the order will be signed on the enrollment of applicants for places under contracts for paid educational services.
