University Judo Championship in Memory of Vladimir Bogachev Takes Place in St. Petersburg

This year the oldest tournament was named after the founder of Leningrad - St. Petersburg student judo.

On Thursday, October 21st, the official opening ceremony of the annual judo championship among St. Petersburg higher schools took place in St. Petersburg State Mining University. This year one of the oldest tournaments held by the city Judo Federation since 1973 was named after the founder of judo for students of Leningrad - St. Petersburg, USSR master of sports in sambo and judo, candidate of pedagogical sciences, and coach Vladimir Bogachyov. Rector Vladimir Litvinenko attended the official opening ceremony along with the chairman of St. Petersburg Committee for Physical Culture and Sport Anton Shantyr and president of the St. Petersburg Judo Federation, honoured coach of Russia Mikhail Rakhlin.

The venue for the Championship was not chosen by chance. Since 1981, the university’s coach Vladimir Bogachyov trained over 20 masters of sport and formed one of the strongest judo teams in the history of the higher school.

This year, representatives of 24 institutions of higher education took part in the traditional championship, including students of Polytechnic University, LETI, Russian Academy of National Economy and Public Administration, Herzen University, ITMO, St. Petersburg State University, and St. Petersburg State Transport University.
