St. Petersburg Mining University students say their alma mater is one of the top higher educational institutions in Russia
On Monday, January 24, the results of the public opinion poll published on the “Tabiturient” website became known. More than 4 thousand insiders took part in it on conditions of anonymity, comments of each of them were checked by experts for reliability.
Total research covered more than 300 universities and only 14 of them received the “green label – 2022” award. That is, they were officially recognized by the portal as quality providers of educational services. In addition to Mining University, this list also included MGIMO, Bauman Moscow State Technical University, MIFI, Gubkin University of Oil and Gas, and a number of other organizations representing the national institution of higher education.
What do young people value most of all? As it turned out, not only the quality of education itself, but also infrastructure, the convenience of campus locations, future employment prospects, the work of the admissions committee, and several other factors.
“Very cool buildings, awesome dorms, great conditions for students to study and live. Very high level of education, most of the teachers are a true gift of fate, a lot of practice in well-equipped laboratories and directly at the sites, there are double-degree programs (i.e. study abroad - ed.). All on Vaska (Vasilievsky Island - ed.): dormitories next to the buildings, all buildings are territorially in the same location, a lot of research work, active extracurricular life. And Mining University is one of the top 15 universities in the world in its profile - a very high achievement, in my opinion, perfect conditions of EVERYTHING, from computers to gym equipment," writes one of the students.
Another surveyee says that the dormitories “exceed all expectations”. And “the level of equipment in classrooms and laboratories can be rated 10 out of 10”. The university, according to this respondent, is “very coolly renovated, both externally and internally it looks perfect”. This is all because the administration “invests a lot of money” for this purpose.
“In terms of equipment, there is no equal to Mining University at all. Right now we have three academic buildings. All of them were repaired and polished, a lot of new good equipment, including, from partners of the university. The list of those is endless. Among them are Schneider Electric, Lukoil, Gazprom, Rosneft, Cisco, some even have their own branded classrooms in the main building,” specifies another survey participant.
In addition to the rich instrument and laboratory facilities, the surveyees also point to the great opportunities that are open to holders of a higher education degree from Russia’s oldest technical school.
“The main advantage of the university and, even more so, of my field of study is the great prospects. Meetings with graduates are held, which inspires optimism because everyone has found their place in life, some earn over 100 thousand, some get jobs at Gazprom (the university works closely with Gazprom),” says a representative of the Oil and Gas Faculty.
A female student of the same field specifies that she did her internship at Rosneft, while her classmates worked at Gazprom, Gazprom Neft, Lukoil, and some other flagship companies. She calls it “a very clear plus”. According to the students, the high-quality practical classes organized on the premises of Mining University, by its faculty, are no less important.
“Just amazing summer internships! I will speak only in relation to the department of geoecology, but it is just perfectly planned programs, the main purpose of which is to practically acquaint us with the future profession, to show the working conditions, technologies of the solution of environmental problems. Literally every day of the six-week internship was filled with meetings with graduates, representatives of environmental movements, laboratory research,” writes a third-year student.
Another plus, the young people say, is the uniforms, which are a source of pride:
“The uniform requirements are equal not only for students but also for teachers. The jackets are very high quality and fit well, so you don’t have to worry about that.”
Several respondents noted the high level of work of the admissions committee:
“This is the best admissions committee in the whole country. I can vouch for my words because I am sure of it. I also applied to Moscow State University, St. Petersburg State University, Gubkin University, and Polytechnic University, and nowhere is this even close. Almost complete automation of the application process reduces the number of errors and increases the speed of the entire procedure - a special thanks for that. I spent 10 minutes on the PC. Electronic line practically reduces the human factor - no one can come in without a line as it was in some universities, no confusion is for whom, you just see and hear your number and go to the big hall. The PC staff are very calm, explain everything to you, answer all your questions.
One of the students who left the most extensive review on the “Tabiturient” website, summing up, said that he “heartily recommends Mining University to applicants who want to tie their lives to the technical sciences”.
“The main thing is to set a goal to study, and the competent teachers and disposing environment at the university will help with the rest,” summed up the young man.
It should be noted that during the past admission campaign applicants submitted to the university admissions committee more than 33 thousand applications, much more than in previous years. The competition was 19 people per place (in 2020 - 11). The number of places for admission to study at the expense of budgetary allocations was also a record (1,831 for bachelor’s/specialist degree programs, 420 for Master’s degree programs).
