The Mining School owes its appearance to Empress Catherine the Great; it first opened its doors in 1773. Today's university building, which is an architectural ensemble decorated with porticoes of twelve columns, was created by Andrei Voronikhin. At first, before the building of the University in 1806-1811, engineers in the field of mining were trained here, in two houses, bought from Count Peter Sheremetev, located on the corner of 22nd line of Vasilevsky Island and the Neva embankment.

Among the graduates of the university are world-famous geologists Alexander Karpinsky, Vladimir Obruchev, Dmitry Nalivkin, the founder of the doctrine of oil Ivan Gubkin, a reformer of the metallurgical industry in Russia in the second half of the 19th century Pavel Obukhov, the discoverer of the Volga-Ural oil and gas province Pavel Preobrazhensky and many others.

Today St. Petersburg Mining University is a synergy of modern technologies and richest traditions passed from generation to generation. Its instrument and laboratory base is one of the best in Russia, which allows the university for 250 years to implement the latest developments and breakthrough technologies in enterprises of mineral complex.

"The Mining University in St. Petersburg, thanks to the efforts, first of all, of course, of the rector, is one of the model higher educational institutions in Russia... It is wonderful that we have higher educational institutions of engineering profile of this level. For our country with its large mineral resource base it is especially important" - Vladimir Putin
