The information portal for applicants to undergraduate and graduate programs, Tabiturient.ru, has compiled another Green Label 2023 ranking. Last year, this study covered 300 public universities, but this year their number has almost doubled by half, to 445. The number of insiders also increased, from 4 to 5.5 thousand people, all of whom wrote detailed reviews of their alma mater on condition of anonymity, based on which the ranking was conducted.
St. Petersburg Mining University was included in the top 10 higher education institutions officially recognized as "quality providers of educational services" (without specifying specific locations). Students and alumni in their opinions especially noted the "cosmic level of infrastructure," the absence of corrupt practices, "adequate teaching staff" and the uniforms that are mandatory for both students and teachers.
"Repair and condition of the buildings. In this respect, Gorny is at some cosmic level. The university has three training centers located on Vasilievsky Island. The first two years of training are held in TC № 3 on Maly Prospekt, which was built in 2016, respectively, there are no questions about repair, the equipment is new, everywhere is clean and neat. In TC №1 (historical building on the embankment of Lieutenant Schmidt - ed.) is now being repaired and to say that it is being done at the highest level - to say nothing, in the classrooms - carpeting, nice and comfortable furniture, projectors and interactive whiteboards, in computer classes there are new Dell computers", - writes a graduate of the oil and gas department.
In addition to high-quality facilities, young people pay attention to the convenient location - all university campuses are within walking distance of each other. Another plus is the huge pool of partners, including flagship domestic and foreign companies such as Rosneft, Novatek, FosAgro, Gazprom Mezhregiongaz, Caterpillar, Schneider Electric and many others.
"The location is prime, all the academic buildings are on Vaska (Vasilievsky Island - ed.). The dorms are not far away, the best ones are 1,3,4. The rest were worse, but even they were better than the rest of the dorms in St. Petersburg. It's also okay here... Inside, everything is totally hype, too. Computers, libraries, elevators - everything is normal... After graduation from the Mining University, in normal specialties, they say that it is easy to find a job. I find this out after I graduate, but I know a graduate who holds a big position in his specialty," says a student of raw materials processing.
Most of the reviews mention the absence of corruption and, as a consequence, "freebies" in the Mining University. However, almost all insiders assure that studying at Russia's oldest technical university, which this year celebrates its 250th anniversary, is not that difficult. The main thing is to be diligent and not to get too carried away with the discos in Dumskaya Street.
"There is practically no corruption ... Personally, I have never come across one. For the most part, the teaching staff is adequate. Human attitude to the student. Good canteens and dormitories... A high level of education of the applicants," writes a graduate of the university.
Current students echoed him:
"Actually, about the learning process. No freebies. No automatons for exams, either. But it is interesting to study, even in the humanities, such as sociology, and general history (simply because the teachers present the material in an interesting way, you listen with your mouth open). They ask quite a lot, if you try to study and also do extracurricular activities, then you can forget about computer games, truancy, extended weekday parties. In this respect, the five-day program saves you a lot."
The students also note the huge choice of all kinds of sports sections and clubs of interest. Anyone can spend their free time, if they have any, as they like, in the company of like-minded people.
"More than 80 sports, among the coaches there are world champions. Our teams often travel to international competitions. In addition to the usual gyms, we have our own swimming pool in Building 2 and a fitness room in Building 3. You can use all of this for free. A ton of different clubs, from board games to Case Championships (cases are a competition between teams to find the best solution to some problem in business)," says the respondent.
Another highlight of the university is the compulsory wearing of uniform jackets. On the one hand, this refers to the rich history of the university, because it was created as a semi-military organization with strict rules and daily routine, and its graduates received the title of military engineers. On the other hand, it is a guarantee of equality. Regardless of social status or regalia, everyone here has the same rights.
"Mining University changed my attitude to uniforms. Our jackets make us proud. The uniform requirements are equal not only for students, but also for faculty members. The jackets are very high quality, fit well, so you don't have to worry about that," writes another insider.
Note that in addition to the St. Petersburg Mining University in the top 10 of Russian higher education institutions officially recognized as "quality providers of educational services" and received this year a Green Label from the portal Tabiturient.ru entered five more universities - members of the consortium Subsoil. They are Bauman Moscow State Technical University, MIFI, Gubkin Oil and Gas University, Mendeleev Russian Chemical Technical University and MISIS.
