The acceptance of original documents on education for admission to specialization and bachelor's degree programs on a budgetary basis in St. Petersburg universities is over. Already today, August 4, Empress Catherine II Saint Petersburg Mining University published an order with the results of the admission campaign.
In 2023, the oldest technical university in Russia received a record number of applications from applicants: it exceeded 40 thousand. In previous years, this figure varied between 33-35 thousand.
The global program "School Leader" played a big role in career guidance activities. It was an innovation of this year, which allowed 971 applicants to enroll early. The winners of the competition received a priority right to enrollment, which was realized in case they achieved the necessary minimum threshold score according to the results of the Unified State Exam. Thus, almost half of the budgetary places were allocated even before the main results of the admission campaign were announced.
A total of 2,337 budgetary places were allocated this year - 982 at the specialty, 940 at the bachelor's degree and 415 at the master's degree. It should be noted that for the first time in many years, the number of places for specialization courses is higher than for bachelor's courses. This is explained by the participation of the Mining University in the pilot project on the reform of higher education, within the framework of which it is planned to make a smooth exit from the Bologna process and return to the traditional system of training engineers within 5-6 years. It assumes that during the first three semesters all students will master a single program - the "core of higher education". And then they will move on to the study of disciplines by major areas of training and specialized subjects, as well as obtaining additional competencies.
"History repeats itself. 250 years ago, our country was experiencing a colossal shortage of engineering personnel, which is why a decision was made at the highest level to establish the Mining School - today's St. Petersburg Mining University. Today Russia is facing similar challenges and it is symbolic that it was the Mining University that became the pilot university for the transition to a more efficient system of basic higher technical education. The results of the admission campaign are obvious: our ideas and decisions, including the creation of a "core of higher education", the mastery of which is mandatory for all areas of training, are supported at all levels. Both by employers, the university community and, most importantly, by applicants," emphasized Vladimir Litvinenko, Rector of the Empress Catherine II Saint Petersburg Mining University.
This year the average competition in the university amounted to 18 people per place. It is important to understand that it was much higher for the most popular specialties. Thus, the competition for "Mechanical Engineering" amounted to 49 people per place, and for "Oil and Gas Engineering" - 43 people per place.
Among the most demanded were such areas of study as "Economics", "Informatics and Computer Science", "Chemical Technology", "Oil and Gas Engineering" and "Construction of Unique Buildings and Structures". The minimum passing score for these specialties was 268, 258, 256, 256, 253 and 248 respectively.
This year a new specialization was opened, called "Construction of high-rise and large-span buildings and structures". Taking into account the current trends in the commercial and residential real estate sector, this specialization has shown high interest from applicants.
As of today, the future first-year students of the university can start preparing for the beginning of their education by getting uniforms, registering chip cards and writing an application for a place in a dormitory.
