Domestic expertise in the field of efficient subsoil use will contribute to strengthening the technological sovereignty of the continent. Participants of the one-year full-time professional retraining program “Management of Subsoil Use Facilities” will include employees of resource extraction companies, government authorities, and universities from Africa. Empress Catherine II Saint Petersburg Mining University has launched the selection process for the program.

A delegation from Black Gold Mining (Benshangul-Gumuz region, Ethiopia) visited Saint Petersburg Mining University. The head of the corporation, Ms. Meseret Tsahai, spoke about the company’s extensive experience in coal mining in the country and how, thanks to the activities of the largest mining company in the region, Ethiopia became independent of foreign coal supplies.

The Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the United Republic of Tanzania to the Russian Federation, Mr. Frederick Ibrahim Kibuta, held a working meeting with the university’s rector, Vladimir Litvinenko.

The forum includes leaders from UNESCO institutes and centers, the World Federation of Engineering Organizations, and leading technical universities from 65 countries around the world.

At the end of October, the oldest technical university in Russia will host the international forum ”Mineral Resources as the Basis of National Sovereignty – Workforce and Innovation Environment.” It will serve as a natural continuation of the agenda of the Russia-Africa summits held in 2019 and 2023, and a key milestone event in the work of the university consortium ”Africa’s Subsoil,” created at the initiative of Empress Catherine II St. Petersburg Mining University and the Competence Center for Mining Education under the auspices of UNESCO.

On Wednesday, 5 June, a delegation from the Republic of Sudan led by Minister of Mineral Resources Mohammed Albashir Abunommo paid a working visit to Empress Catherine II St. Petersburg Mining University. During the meeting with Rector Vladimir Litvinenko, he discussed the prospects of scientific and educational co-operation. The level of Russia’s trade turnover with African countries last year increased by 30% and amounted to about 25 billion dollars. According to expert forecasts, this figure may well double in 5 years, which will make the Sunny continent one of the largest trade and economic partners of our country.
