One of the conceptual features of the process of modernization of higher technical education in Russia is a sharp increase in the time allocated for industrial practice. Whereas in the case of bachelors it is conducted only once during the entire period of study, at the end of the third year, for two to three weeks, the modified curricula envision an increase in its duration to a total of 10 months.

25 school principals from different Russian regions received incentive grants of 50 and 100 thousand rubles for popularization of engineering education and active cooperation with the Empress Catherine II St. Petersburg Mining University, where a pilot project on modernization of the system of personnel training for the national economy is being implemented today. The ceremony was held within the framework of the All-Russian methodological seminar ”New Approaches to Secondary Education in the Interest of Forming the Country’s Technological Leadership”.

The spring semester has begun in Russian higher education institutions. The corridors and classrooms of Russian universities are gradually beginning to fill up with young people who have returned to their alma mater after a short vacation. Many of them took advantage of the pause in classes to fly to their native lands and meet with friends and relatives. Scientists from Empress Catherine II Saint Petersburg Mining University and Shiraz University held the first teleconference, during which they discussed the roadmap for the upcoming research of joint research groups. Their results will be concrete developments affecting a wide range of knowledge areas - increasing mining safety, developing renewable energy sources, improving the efficiency of wastewater treatment and much more.

This academic year, St. Petersburg Mining University commissioned two new dormitories for non-resident students. However, the term ”dormitory” in the usual sense of the word is not quite appropriate here. The conceptual difference is that young men and women who study at the first technical university in Russia no longer live in rooms, but in separate studios, reminiscent of rooms in a good hotel.

Last week, Russian President Vladimir Putin put the new wintering complex of Vostok station into trial operation via video link. It is 1,200 kilometres from the nearest coast and is located on a lifeless ice plateau at an altitude of over three and a half kilometres.
