Students of the AGH University of Science and Technology (Akademia Górniczo-Hutnicza im. Stanisława Staszica w Krakowie) shared their views on the practice held by the Mining University in Saint-Petersburg. The practical training took place in July in accordance with a programme "Modern technologies of drilling, transportation and storage of oil and gas".

As a part of a summer school programme, leading professors of the University delivered a set of lectures as well as a number of workshops. Besides, students from Poland were provided with an opportunity of unassisted working on the drilling rigs at the school facilities in Sablino. The field trip was conducted under the supervision of teachers.

Bartesz Kowal, one of the students, was very happy with his summer studies. Here, in Saint-Petersburg he drilled his first hole, which is “a truly unique experience”, as he admits. In addition, the students were given an opportunity to use modern drilling equipment, which is applied in practice by scientists in rigorous research. As Bartesz Kowal adds, “I believe that this sort of training is very important to us, students”.

The similar opinion holds Tomasz Krol, another student from Poland. As he says, “I gained significant practical experience through the use of the drilling simulator at the Sablino plant. I really liked the practical trainings and field visits. The hospitality, politeness and positive energy of the teachers and tutors impressed me as well. What I liked the most, however, is that the Summer School programme was a mixture of science and cultural activities, as we had numerous cultural trips around the city throughout the course”.

AGH University of Science and Technology is a long-standing partner of the Mining University. Every year its graduate students come to Poland as interns. The Poles, in turn, come to the Mining University as delegates of competition of young scientists “Subsurface Resources Management Problems”. This year representatives of the AGH University won the nomination called “Machinery, transportation services and energy performance of the mineral resources sector manufacturers”. They also got two certificates of a second-class degree. Participation in the International Summer School of the Mining University shall be considered as a new stage in the development of partnership between the two higher educational institutions.

As Tomasz Jaur, another student, says, “It was an interesting experience, which can be used in the field. I drilled a hole for the first time in my life, which was a great experience of using a drilling simulator. I got to know the country’s culture. We also had a nice accommodation provided to us. Not to mention that such a great idea it was to mix practical learning with cultural trips”.

Mateusz Sarad sums it up as “It was a great time here in Saint-Petersburg. I have seen many beautiful places as well as learnt a lot of new things. The hosts were very polite and helpful. I was also glad that many people speak English here, because it gives an opportunity to learn more interesting and useful stuff. All in all, it would be great to become a participant of the summer school sometime in the future.”

As students from Poland believe, the integration of higher schools around the world inevitably improves the quality of education, and participation in the events such as international forums or summer schools not only affects the expertise level, but also provides an opportunity to get acquainted with the culture of the host country.
