An intensive German language course started at St. Petersburg Mining University. Its peculiarity is the combination of lectures and practical classes, and the accent is made in favour of the latter. As the organizers assure, after three lessons the participants of the group can already build simple sentences, and after one month they can confidently communicate with the inhabitants of Germany.
Such efficiency is achieved due to several factors. First, during one lesson a team of teachers spends for the theoretical part, including an explanation of the various rules and nuances of German in about 20 minutes. A work in pairs, in which the acquired knowledge is reinforced, lasts about an hour and a half. Secondly, the composition of these pairs constantly varies, allowing students to quickly overcome the language barrier. And finally, thirdly, informal meetings are held every 2-3 classes to increase psychological comfort. Now, as weather permits, they are held outdoors.
“During these meetings, communication is only allowed in German. But since the participants are in a stress-free atmosphere, they can relax, which helps them to consolidate their knowledge. Each of them has a supervisor, who is ready to give advice and answer any question, and help with homework if needed,” said Taisia Ushkova, course founder and research engineer at the Mining University's Digital Technology Education and Research Center.
The increased demand for such programs on the part of students and teachers is provided by the academic mobility programs that Mining University implements together with its partners - the Freiberg Mining Academy from Germany and the Leoben Mining University from Austria. Fluency in German is, of course, an additional advantage when selecting candidates for these programs.
“A large number of events aimed at developing additional ‘language’ competencies of students is planned for the next year. Intensive German and English language courses, language partnerships between Russian and foreign students, cultural exchange are just some of them. Mutual interest in cultures of other countries by ordinary citizens contributes not only to improving humanitarian ties but also contributes to strengthening scientific cooperation,” said Taisia Ushkova.
She also noted that the project of intensive German language courses is implemented in partnership with the International Center of Competence in Mining Engineering Education under the auspices of UNESCO, the Association of International Mutual Development created by the postgraduates and
students with the support of the Office of International Affairs, and the German Club of Mining University, which recruits some of the teachers.
