This year, the British Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3) accredited 27 short-term educational programs of summer schools of St. Petersburg Mining University. Thereby recognizing their high level and compliance with the highest international standards.

Among them are, for instance, “Engineering Geodesy: Theory and Practice”, “Visualisation of Digital Prototypes of Mining Workings and Equipment”, “Offshore Field Development”, and a number of others. Last summer, despite the pandemic, representatives of many Russian and foreign universities were able to try them out and improve their skills.

According to Jan Boubrick, the Head of the Qualification Assessment Department of IOM3, the quality of programs presented to the British Technical Council was very high and the information about them was very detailed. This included, among other things, detailed curricula and an extensive set of methodological materials. That is why the expert commission, which had been reviewing the documents for two months, decided on accreditation. Moreover, not a single comment was made on the papers during the analysis, which happens very rarely.

“We did accredit the educational programs offered by our partners - St. Petersburg Mining University and the International Center of Competence in Mining Education under the auspices of UNESCO. The summer schools provide students and other trainees with good additional education necessary for their career development. It is very important for those who are starting their professional journey,” emphasized Jan Beaubrik.

The St. Petersburg University has a long-standing cooperation with representatives of the United Kingdom. Its quintessence was the signing in June 2019 of an agreement on the recognition of the Russian National Association of Mining Engineers by the regional representation of IOM3. Since then, Russian experts accredited by the British have received the right to independently certify specialists for the title of “Professional Mining Engineer” on behalf of the London Institute. The status assigned to them is recognized in the overwhelming majority of countries and is indisputable proof of the high level of competence of its holder.

Russian National Association of Mining Engineers has received the exclusive right to be engaged in international certification of specialists in mining companies under the license of the British Engineering Council. What is the essence of the agreement?

“I am confident that the educational programs of our accredited summer schools will be developed and replenished, and that the specialists trained under these curricula will begin successful careers in fields related to mining. I am looking forward to following their progress in the future,” said Jan Beaubrik.

He concluded by noting that the International Center of Competence in Mining Education under the auspices of UNESCO is “in a very advantageous position” because it can provide “quality education and resources not only of St. Petersburg Mining University but also of its partners from Russian industrial enterprises.
