Mining University Research Staff Competing for Prestigious Positions

The Russian National Committee of the World Petroleum Council approved 16 candidates from Russia for the positions of chairmen or vice-chairmen of the sections of the 24th World Petroleum Congress. Five representatives of St. Petersburg Mining University are among the applicants.

World Petroleum Council (WPC) was founded in 1933. It is a non-commercial and non-political organization accredited by the UN. It includes 65 member countries, which account for more than 96% of world oil and gas production and consumption. The purpose of this association is to promote the rational use of hydrocarbons, improve the competence of employees of specialized enterprises, the introduction of the best technologies that increase the efficiency of field development and reduce human impact on nature.

Every three years, MNS organizes World Petroleum Congresses, which have a reputation of authoritative and representative platforms where professional discussion of the most important issues of the industry’s agenda takes place. The next forum will be held in 2023 in Calgary, Canada. And the final competitive selection of nominees for the positions of chairmen or vice-chairmen of its sections will take place at the General Meeting of the World Petroleum Council Program Committee. It will be held on December 10 in Houston, and there will be more than 50 candidates for each seat, so the competition is enormous.

“If at least one of the representatives of Mining University will be elected as a chairman or his deputy, we will be able to promote the work of the section in the direction relevant to the university,” said Dmitry Tananykhin, Dean of the Oil and Gas Department. “As for the congress as a whole, we will present there the technologies developed at the Mountain and get acquainted with the projects of our foreign colleagues. Conferences like this are a very useful experience, which gives us a better understanding of the trends in the oil and gas industry and allows us to identify the areas of research that are most in-demand in the business.”

In addition to Dmitry Tananyin himself, the candidates from Mining University were Tatiana Aleksandrova, head of the Mineral Processing Department, Igor Pyagay, director of the Scientific Center Problems of mineral and Technogenic Resources Processing, Roman Samsonov, professor of the Department of oil and gas fields development and operation, and Andrey Nikulin, associate professor of the Department of Production Safety.

As a reminder, the 6th Forum of Future Leaders of the World Petroleum Council was held at Mining University in June 2019. It was attended by Valentina Matvienko, Chairman of the Federation Council of the Russian Federation, Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak, as well as more than 1,300 young oil workers from 62 countries.
