This year, for fire safety reasons, the students did not burn the scarecrow, but, as always on the eve of Lent, they ate a whole mountain of pancakes.

On Saturday, March 16, on the territory of dormitory No. 3 of Empress Catherine II Saint Petersburg Mining University the traditional winter farewell took place. They were attended not only by Russians, but also by students from abroad, who were not familiar with our national customs before.

Those foreigners who had already celebrated Maslenitsa before also came to the event. For example, a student of the Faculty of Economics Munhbaatar Oyuunomin from Mongolia said that "for the first time she was pleasantly surprised by the variety of contests and amusements organized during this holiday". But even now, when the girl has already adapted to St. Petersburg, "it still makes the most pleasant impressions".

"This is a great opportunity for guys from different countries to get together and have fun. In Mongolia, as in many other countries where some of my classmates come from, winter is not celebrated in such a colorful and cheerful way, because it is a Slavic tradition, not related to our customs and culture. But that's why we are even a little bit more interesting today than our Russian friends, as it is not new for them," Oyuunomin shared her emotions.

Yuri Pimenov, a student of the Faculty of Civil Engineering, listing which specific components of the holiday he liked most of all, named "the sea of pancakes", as well as the costume contest, which made the event "even more colorful and memorable".

"We can safely say that today's day was a success. We presented our outfits, took part in the pancake contest and themed performances. The tables were overflowing with treats, so I think all the guests obtained extremely positive emotions," said Yuri.

The Council of Students of Mining University, which was the organizer of the festivities, said that every year they add a highlight to their program. This Saturday it was a craft fair, where everyone could hone their skills in molding dough and creating memorable souvenirs.
