Five developments of St. Petersburg Mining University were awarded medals at the Archimedes Salon of Inventions

Two projects of the university scientists took first place in their nominations, three more received silver and bronze awards.

On Wednesday, March 27, Empress Catherine II Saint Petersburg Mining University summed up the results of participation in XXVII International Salon of Inventions and Innovative Technologies "Archimedes", which was traditionally held in Moscow. This year it gathered representatives of 28 states and 30 regions of our country, together they exhibited 570 developments in 30 different areas.

The main criteria for their evaluation within the framework of the competition, which, as before, is an integral part of the exhibition, were scientific novelty, legal protection of intellectual property objects and the presence of prospects for their implementation in a particular production. As the members of the expert jury noted, all five projects of Mining University met these requirements and therefore won prizes.

The most attention of the organizers and guests of the Salon was drawn to the "Innovative technology of needle coke production", which was awarded a gold medal in the nomination "Chemical and Oil and Gas Production Industry". Its authors are Vyacheslav Rudko, Renat Gabdulkhakov, Vladimir Povarov and Igor Pyagai. Through lengthy experiments, they managed to find an optimal way to produce a highly demanded carbon material for the production of graphitized electrodes for metallurgical furnaces and batteries for electric cars.

"The technology includes stages of extractive preparation of raw materials, their polymer modification, thermopolycondensation at 500°C to obtain crude coke and calcination at 1200-1400°C to obtain expensive highly structured needle coke. And, importantly, the raw materials for it can be both residues from oil distillation, i.e. fuel oil and tar, and coal - coal tar and pitch", - explained Vyacheslav Rudko, Executive Director of the Scientific Center "Problems of Processing of Mineral and Technogenic Resources" of Mining University.

Another winner of the contest in the nomination "Information, Control and Navigation Systems" was the project "Smart Mill for Energy Efficiency Improvement". Its authors (Ilya Beloglazov, Alexander Kulchitsky, Yuri Zhukovsky, Mikhail Nikolaev, Bogdan Vasiliev, Nikolay Korolev, and Yana Malkova) assure that this development will allow domestic mining companies to "move to a new level of production process efficiency and improve the quality of the system for predicting failures and malfunctions" in the operation of crushers and other devices designed for grinding materials.

"Digital twins of industrial equipment, based on modern capabilities of computer modeling of solid minerals ore preparation processes, make it possible to noticeably reduce specific energy consumption per unit of finished product. Up to 11.6%. In addition, the total grinding time is reduced by 20%," said Ilya Beloglazov, Associate Professor of the Department of Automation of Technological Processes and Production at Mining University.

It should be noted that the silver medal of the competition held within the framework of the Salon "Archimedes" was awarded to the development "Unmanned Aerial Vehicle" (author: B.Y. Vasiliev). Two more projects took the third places. They are "Method of soil thermal stabilization around piles" (Lavrik A.Yu., Buslaev G.V., Dvoinikov M.V., Kopteva A.V.) and "Technogrunt" (Matveeva V.A., Smirnov Y.D., Chukaeva M.A.).
