As the concentration of a valuable component in ores is declining, the complexity of developing fossil fuel deposits is increasing, and competition is growing, oil & gas and mining companies face the challenge of raising production profitability.

Given the current realities, executives of industrial enterprises will also have to respond to societal demands. In particular, they will be working on minimisation of negative impact on ecosystems and improvement of labour safety. Dealing with these issues is, in turn, nearly impossible without introducing digital technologies.

What role can science play in this transformation? Vladimir Litvinenko, Rector of St. Petersburg Mining University, presented an analysis exploring the implementation of end-to-end digital solutions in survey, exploitation, transportation and utilisation of mineral resources. In this paper, he elaborated a framework facilitating the enhancement of applied digital technologies via the network of research & educational and international competence centres. He also made it clear that technology shifts are required to be able to rise to the challenges the mineral resources sector is facing now.
