13 September 1941, a guerrilla unit composed of Mining Institute students and professors went on a mission behind enemy lines. 35 diversionists left the city, yet only 17 returned 3 months later.

This year it is taking place in five Russian cities.

The university will receive the basic part of the grant in the amount of 100 million rubles. In addition, it became one of the 18 educational institutions recommended for additional support under the ”Research Leadership” track.

This year, the British Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3) accredited 27 short-term educational programs of summer schools of St. Petersburg Mining University.

Once Ivan Gubkin, a Soviet petroleum geologist, was asked about his work before 1917, and he replied by saying that he ”was increasing Russia’s petroleum wealth”. This ambitiousness was quite common amongst Mining University graduates, which is better understood if considering the historical context.

Students, graduate students, and staff of St. Petersburg university are unanimous in their opinion: the tragedy that took place at PSNIU must not be repeated.
