Will Mining University switch to remote mode of education?

Uranium is mined in over 20 countries worldwide. Namibia is - based on uranium reserves - ranked sixth globally, which makes cooperation with the state a matter of particular interest to Russia. Here is a story of a young man who was born in one of Africa’s poorest countries. But thanks to the degree from the Russian university, it took him just a few years to head the branch of an international mining enterprise in his homeland.

For an ordinary resident of St. Petersburg, the word Chechnya associates with something criminally dangerous. Or it sounds like a Russian analogue of the Middle Eastern monarchy. But there is a university in the Northern Capital of Russia, at which its scientists are well aware that the structure of the main industrial base of the Republic is oil. And for a good we can speak about a long-term cooperation with the republic. Graduates of the university have made a significant contribution to the development of the mineral and raw materials industry in Chechnya, to the exploration and development of oil and gas fields in the North Caucasus.

A regional representative office of the International Competence Center in Mining Engineering Education under the auspices of UNESCO was established on the basis of SIBUR. The agreement was signed by the rector of the St. Petersburg Mining University Vladimir Litvinenko and the chairman of the board of SIBUR Holding Dmitry Konov.

Ammonium nitrate explosion, which took place at the port of the city of Beirut on 4 August 2020, caused significant damage to the surrounding areas and resulted in over 200 deaths. The tragic accident once again brought into the focus problems Lebanon is experiencing. The legendary metallurgist Pavel Anosov became world famous as the father of Russian damask steel, when he had managed to reproduce high-quality steel, whose recipe was lost in the Middle Ages. By his research, he also increased the extraction of gold from metal-containing sands by 28 times compared to conventional washing. Why was the scientist suspended from mining then, and the experiments were immediately blocked?

The International Competence Centre for Mining-Engineering Education under the auspices of UNESCO was established on the premises of Saint Petersburg Mining University two years ago. Today, its role, like that of other Institutes and Centres under the auspices of UNESCO, lies in supporting the change of the global landscape, particularly through ensuring equal access to scientific achievements across the globe.
